Alok (Amitabh Bachchan) an individual with a passion for singing, fights with his autocratic & dominating dad, Trilokiprasad, a municipality Chairman (Om Prakash), who feels that Alok is ruining his life with his so called friend from the slums. Trilokiprasad wants Alok to take up some decent job or help his brother in his profession. But Alok is least interested in such jobs. At one point, the differences between two grow to such an extent that Alok renounces his fathers house and decides to become a tanga puller, to make his father realize that the people belonging to lower caste & creed and some of his friends who come from that category of society are also human beings like them & just being poor doesn't make them bad or a cheat. But the stubborn and commanding nature of Trilokiprasad doesn't let him realise, that his point view is incorrect, he should relent & give up his adamant wish, even the condition of Alok doesn't remain hale & hearty, the meagre income which he earns & the growing expense & responsibility of his wife & kid deteriorates his health & he gets some serious disease & this infuses feeling of compassion for his son & Triloki Prasad realises that whatever he is doing, is incorrect & he surrenders to Alok's wish.
