Umesh Mehra’s father, F C Mehra, had an association with Soviet Films, a Russian film company. Two scripts were prepared for a co-production (to be directed by Yash Chopraand Gulzar). They all went for the Tashkent Film festival, but neither of the scripts worked out. Umesh and F.C Mehra stopped by Moscow to the head office of Soviet Films. They suggested the idea of this film. When they were told that there’s no director, F.C Mehra pointed at Umesh and said "No problem, he’ll direct".

The glamrous item number "Khatooba, Khatooba" in the Indo-Russion joint venture was composed, producer F C Mehra and his director son Umesh Mehra were asked by the Russians and the Indians, what the word "Khatooba" means. They told Russians that it meant wine in Hindi and told Indians that it meant wine in Russian. In reality the word "Khatooba" has no meaning at all; it was just a creativity of Anand Bakshi and R D Burman.
