Ameeta was born in 1932. After finishing her studies, she came to Bombay in 1950 to try her luck in Hindi films. Ameeta made her debut with a near B-grade film Anmol Sahara (1952). The film did her no good and bombed at the box-office. Then, she did some secondary roles in Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1955) and Ab-e-Haiyat (1956).
Her career turning point came when she became the protégé of Tolaram Jalan, the owner of Filmistan studios. He decided to re-launch her in a big budget film Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957). Thanks to its popular music, Tumsa Nahin Dekha opened to full houses and was a huge hit. However, Ameeta was overlooked, and the film catapulted Shammi Kapoor to stardom instead.
Although Ameeta continued to do secondary roles in a few more films, She didn’t get any more leading roles. Some of her other notable films were Goonj Uthi Shehnai (1959), Rakhi (1962) and Mere Mehboob (1963).
After Mere Mehboob, where she played the third character in a love triangle, Ameeta got lost in B-grade films and small banners. Her only other popular film was Around the World (1968). Unfortunately, that film also flopped. Ameeta’s last film was Kabhi Dhoop Kabhie Chaaon (1971). Ameeta leads a happy married life with two kids, but has become very reticent and lives much away from the glitzy world of Hindi movies. She is extremely bitter about her stint as an actress in Hindi films. Ameeta’s daughter Sabeeha also did a few films as an actress like Baap Dus Numbri Beta Dus Numbri (1990), 100 Days (1991) and Khiladi (1992).
