Amit Kumar was born on July 3, 1952. He is the son of the Kishore Kumar and the Bengali actress Ruma Guha Thakurta. Music and performing arts were in his blood. Amit Kumar was trained in singing from his childhood.
He played a pivotal role of the protagonist’s son in Kishore Kumar’s Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein and later used to most of his father’s movies. Amit Kumar got a few offers to sing in films like Aandhi (1975), Chori Mera Kaam (1977), and Khatta Meetha (1978). His first hit song was “Bade achche lagte hain…” from Balika Badhu (1976). He also sang songs in big films like Golmaal (1979) and Kasme Vaade (1979). Amit Kumar shot to fame when he sang for Love Story (1981), which marked the debut of Kumar Gaurav and Vijeyta Pandit. The film was a super hit, and the songs topped the charts for weeks. Amit Kumar was suddenly the most-wanted singer for romantic songs in the 80s.
Unfortunately, 80s were the era of action films, and didn’t have much scope for out and out romantic numbers. However, Amit Kumar made his presence felt at times with songs like "Street Dancer" (Ilzaam), "Hero Hiralal" (Hero Hiralal) and "Na jaane" (Chaalbaaz). He did play back for Govinda in all his films of late 80s. But his potential was never fully tapped by any music director. After his father’s death in 1987, Amit Kumar became the most sought after male playback singer. Amit was the favourite of all the established music directors. Things changed in 1990 with the coming of new music directors, their favourite singers got to sing the best of the new wave of melodies. Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu and Abhijeet became tough competition on Amit. Although, Amit Kumar got a few melodious songs also, that was not good enough. With the death of R. D. Burman, Amit’s biggest supporter, and also the retirement or rough patch of stalwarts like Laxmikant Pyarelal, Kalyanji Anandji, Bappi Lahiri or Rajesh Roshan, Amit was nowhere in the toppers. In 2007-08, Amit Kumar judged a TV reality show, K for Kishore, a tribute to his father. He won Filmfare award in 1981 for Best playback singing for the song “Yaad aa rahi hai…” (Love Story). Amit also acted in a Bengali film called Gayak.
