Amrita Rao was born on June 9, 1981. She is a Konkani. She did her schooling from C.G. High school, and pursued her degree in Pyschology in Sophia College. Meanwhile, she auditioned for Fairever Fairness cream ad and got selected. She acted in various TV commercials and many film-makers started noticing her talent.

One of them was Raj Kanwar who offered her a lead role on a film about re-incarnation of two star-crossed lovers. The film was Ab Ka Baras (2002), which also marked the debut of Raj babbar’s son Arya Babbar.Ab Ke Baras flopped at the box-office. She also did a cameo in Raj Kumar Santoshi’s The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002). Unfortunately, she was not noticed much in this film either.

Amrita Rao shot to fame with Ishq Vishk (2003). This film was a sleeper hit, and gave a new lease of life to Amrita Rao’s career. This film also saw a great chemistry between her and Shahid Kapur. Next year, Amrita Rao did pivotal roles in Masti (2004) and Main Hoon Naa (2004) which were huge hits. Soon, Amrita Rao was being touted as the “Lucky Mascot” of the season.

But like everything, Amrita Rao’s career graph too came down. Her next film Deewaar (2004) failed to do well at the box-office. She had small roles in Waah! Life Ho To Aisi (2005), Shikhar (2005) and Pyare Mohan (2006), but these two films also flopped. However, Sooraj Barjatiya’s Vivah (2006) changed the equations for Amrita. It was a huge hit, and Amrita Rao’s performance as the shy small-town girl was acclaimed by one and all.

Although she didn’t sign many films after Vivah, She was one of the most sought-after young talents in Hindi films. Meanwhile, she did Athidi (2007), a Telugu film with a Telugu film super star Mahesh Babu, which is one of the biggest hits ever. Her latest film My Name is Anthony Gonsalves (2008) didn’t fare well at the box-office. Currently, Amrita Rao is the brand ambassador of Miss Players Apparels and D’Damas jewellery. Famous artist M. F. Hussain chose her as the theme for his paintings.
