Amrita Singh was born to Shivinder Singh, a Sikh gentleman, and Rukhsana Sultana, a Muslim lady. As a result, Amrita grew up to be well versed in Hindi, English, and Punjabi. She is also the niece of the famous writer, Khushwant Singh. Her father was an army officer, while her mother was a political activist during the emergency period.
Amrita made her debut in Hindi films in Betaab (1983) opposite Sunny Deol. Thereafter, she acted in many superhit films such as Sunny (1984), Mard (1985), Saaheb (1985), Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986), Naam (1986) and Khudgarz (1987).
She has essayed many different roles in her career. Amrita opted out of the film industry, post her marriage to Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan. The couple have two children a daughter named Sara and a son named Ibrahim.
However things did not work out between them, and they divorced eventually. After her divorce, Amrita returned to acting in some good roles such as Kalyug (2005), Shootout At Lokhandwala (2007) and Dus Kahaniyan (2007). She also ventured into television serials such as the popular series "Kavyanjali".
