    Pilgrims go to Kumbh Mela, which is held once every three years. The author Kalkut starts his journey from Allahabad. Pilgrims, saints, spiritual heads, preachers and yogis going for sacred rituals, but Kalkut believes in humanity. Ordinary people become his teachers, he learns from them. He meets with Balram Baul and his wife Lakshmi. Balram is a good singer though he has a physical handicap. He teaches Kalkut that anyone can be injured at any time, but he/she should continue his/her duties. He meets Prahlad, his wife and his grandmother - Prahlad is now unemployed because his factory has shut down. . He meets a beautiful young lady Shama, who is going to Allahabad with her old sick husband and his two other wives. They reach Allahabad. In this manner he meets more characters and encounters more incidents. There is a young lady, a young widow who feeds her father-in-law with the money she gets by selling her body to pilgrims. Then there is a middle aged man, searching for his absconding daughter. A love affair develops between Shama and the author. On the day of the main rituals there is a major stampede. Balram and Shama's husband both die in the mad crowd. Many people are injured including Prahlad's family. Kalkut returns with the memory of Kumbhmela - Amritkumbh.
