Debutant director Atanu Ghosh’s “Angshumaner Chhobi” is not about Angshuman but about the artists who works in his film. The whole thing starts when Angshuman (Indraniel) comes to Kolkata from Italy to make a docu-feature film starrer Pradyot Mukherjee (Soumitra Chatterjee) and Madhura Sen (Indrani Halder). Both the actors have their own dilemmas, so Pradyot Mukherjee has retired himself and Madhura Sen fails to judge her own capabilities. Angshuman however convinces both the actors to work in his film with the help of his friend (Rudranil Ghosh) and his wife Sonali (Anjana Basu). Madhura Sen’s ex-husband commits suicide and a police investigation starts. She emotionally depends on Indranil (Tota Roy Choudhury) who is a male prostitute. However, Angshuman’s film starts and slowly the artists come out of their inner contradictions and discovers themselves. In this mean time the investigation officer Souriya Ray (Ananya Chatterjee) discovers that Madhura’s ex-husband didn’t commit suicide but was murdered. She finds the culprit and Angshuman’s film ends giving new life to the creative sole of Pradyot Mukherjee and Madhura Sen.
Debutant director Atanu Ghosh has himself written the story, screenplay and dialogues. But to make the movie precise and short (2hrs 15mins) he has avoided detailing. The inner contradictions of Pradyot Mukherjee has been expressed in two scenes and Madhura’s problem was expressed by her friend Indranil. But the way the director has shown how the artists are helping each other to over come their dilemmas while other are enjoying the campfire party, needs special mention here. As two plots are shown parallely in this short time, the investigation part sometimes spoils the mood of the film. Though the guilty was found but the motive of the murder was not well explained. Otherwise the film has not more flaws. The script of the movie is good but the dialogues are ordinary.
All the artists suited their characters well, Soumitra Chatterjee as Pradyot Mukherje and Indrani Halder as Madhura Sen had made the characters live onscreen. Sabyasachi Chakraborty has played a very small role of Angshuman’s blind “master mashai” and Koushik Sen has appeared only once. Being Angshuman (Indraneil) has nothing to do because has been done by Soumitra and Indrani. Hats Off ! The new look of Tota is outstanding. In this film he plays the character of a male prostitute who ultimately dies of Aids. Probably this is the first Bengali movie who has dealt with the issue of male prostitution.
The cinematography by Sandip Sen is beautiful. The scene where Pradyot tells Madhura to concentrate on a nail and keeps on talking and ultimately as words brings tears in Madhura’s eyes proving that she didn’t concentrate, has been captured excellently.
The songs of this film are different. The lyrics by Suchandra Choudhury and music by Rocket Mondal well suits the film and the situations though they are not too much in number. The songs are choreographed well by Sukalyan Bhattacharya.
This movie represents a different genre in Bengali movies, which is rare but needed. People can go to seen this movie, but do not expect regular romantic songs hip-hops and hero-villain fights, not even a melodramatic tear-shed. But still everything is present in this film in a different way.
