Anil Chatterjee was born on 25th October , 1929 .He did his schooling from Delhi. He was a meritorious student who stood first in Senior Cambridge Examination in the entire North India. After that, he joined the famous St.Xavier’s College in Kolkata and completed his graduation in Economics .He had worked in a private company for a short span of time and later joined radio. He was the first actor of his time who took active participation in politics and won the Bidhan Sabha election from Chowringhee. In 1953, he got married and had three sons and one daughter.
Anil Chatterjee started his journey in films as an assistant director of Ardhendu Mukhopadhay. He used to get different small roles in movies during that time. But in 1957, he got his first break as an actor, working for the director Naresh Mitra’s movie “Ulka” After that , he never looked back and his talent got recognized. His small role in Ritwik Ghatak’s Nagarik was also well appreciated. He gave one of his outstanding performances in Ritwik Ghatak’s Meghe Dhaka Tara (1960) as brother of the protagonist of the movie, portrayed by Supriya Devi. Anil gave another brilliant performance in Ritwik Ghatak’s Komal Gandhar (1961). In 1964, he participated in the Berlin Film Festival as the lead character of the movie “Mahanagar”.In the same year, he also went to Mexico’s Acapulco Film Festival. He was the first Indian who went to Latin America as a cultural representative of the country. Apart from that, he had worked in many Hindi movies and Bengali and Hindi television shows. For a short stretch of time Anil Chatterjee was also involved in English theatre with his illustrious contemporary Utpal Dutt when he was in St. Xaviers College.
Anil Chatterjee was actively associated with 20 film organizations. He was the president of many film associations like Federation of Film Societies of India, Federation of Film Technician and Workers’ of Eastern India, Shilpi Sansad, South Calcutta Film Society. He was also the chairman of Nandan. Anil Chatterjee was the vice president of All India Employees Confederation and director of West Bengal Film Development Corporation. Moreover, he was also an active member of Film Advisory Committee of West Bengal and Film Development Board ,Government of West Bengal. This brilliant actor passed away on 16th march, 1996 leaving behind his endless classics.
