Anil Ganguly was born in Kolkata. He had passion for films, and watched Dev Anand films by saving his pocket money for weeks. After finishing his studies, Anil Ganguly came to Bombay to try to get some work in the Hindi films. He was the chief assistant director on the classic comedy Half Ticket (1962).

Anil Ganguly got his first break as a director with Mera Yaar Mera Dushman (1969) starring Mumtaz. This film didn’t do well at Box-office however. Anil Ganguly’s next film Kora Kagaz (1974) starring Vijay Anand and Jaya Bhaduri was a big hit. It not only won Jaya Bhaduri the much-coveted Filmfare award for Best actress that year but also established him as a promising director of the middle-class cinema. His next film Tapasya (1976) was a surprise hit at box-office. It also won Raakhee a Filmfare award for Best actress. Now, Anil Ganguly had carved a niche for himself in the industry.

After Tapasya, Anil Ganguly gave 6 flop films in a row. With Saaheb (1985), Anil Ganguly made a nice comeback. The film was about the plight of middle-class joint families, and did reasonably well. After Saaheb, Anil Ganguly made Sadak Chhap (1987), but it was a big flop. He made 5 films after Sadak Chhap but none of them did well at the box-office. Meanwhile, he produced films like Sadak Chhap (1987), Dushman Devta (1991) and Dil Ki Baazi (1993). Famous TV Artist Rupali Ganguli is her daughter.
