"Ankahee"(The Untold) is a powerful film, directed by Amol Palekar, that deals with the middle class fatalism and superstitions, Palekar himself and Deepti Naval in the lead. Nandu (Palekar) an agonistic, believes that the powers of his father, an astrologer whose predictions happen more often than not to come true, are psychologically destructive. However, he cannot help lending them some credence when his father predicts that Sushma, a woman with strong and rational beliefs, whom Nandu loves and proposes to marry, will die in childbirth.
Nandu vacillates, torn between his love for the girl and his father's predictions. By marrying her, would be actually killing her ? At that point, Indu, daughter of a childhood friend of Nandu's father, comes to stay with them while she undergoes treatment for acute anxiety attacks. Indu too bears the scars of her extremely brutal treatment at the hands of wich-doctors in her village. A psychiatrist pronounces her curable, especially since she feels secure with her hosts. But, Nandu hatches a plan whereby he will marry Indu ; once Indu has passed away, as predicted by his father, he can marry Sushma, to whom, as the second wife, the same turn of events cannot apply. Sushma, horrified, refuses to go along with this plan and breaks off her relationship with Nandu. He, undeterred, marries Indu. When she conceives, he reveals to her, in a moment of candour, his father's prediction. In the last phase of pregnancy. Indu, now completely cured and at peace with herself, calls on Sushma to bid farewell to her and thank her for the happiness she has experienced during the last year, for she had been attracted to Nandu from the very outset.
