Ramshankar lived in abject poverty with his wife Jahnatri, son Harisankar and daughters Sati and Savitri. Harisanker had joined the zamindar Naren Bhaduri's theatre unit. So Harisankar could not return home every night and that annoyed Ramshankar very much. Vishnu a local young man, gave a job to Ramshankar where he would earn ten rupees per month. Jahnatri, Sati and Savitri tried their level best to earn as much as possible. Kamala, the daughter of a rich man, was married to zamindar Naren Bhaduri. Kamala and Sati were childhood friends. One day Naren saw Sati and got infatuated by her. One day he came on horse back to Sati's place. Seeing the rifle in his hand Sati ran away. Vishnu stood first in the MA examinations. He decided to spend the amount for the development of the village. Vishnu's aunt gave word to Sati's mother that there would be a marriage between Vishnu and Sati. Vishnu said that until his promise was fulfilled he would not marry. So Ramsankar arranged Sati's marriage with an old man Tinkari Lahiri. Within seven days Sati returned home as a widow. Now Vishnu realised Sati's sacrifice and married her.
