Abubha Gupta was born in Dinajpur, West Bengal on the year 1930. She was the first child of her parents. Her father was Mridula. She was fond of dance, song and football since her childhood. Her music talent brought her to the limelight of Bengali Cinema. Her debut film was as a playback singer in the film like “Sandhi”, “Karn Arjun”, “Samrat Ashoke” etc. At the same time she also acted in drama like Tagore’s “Bisarjan”, “Siraj-ud-doula”.
She studied first in Parry Charan Girls School, and then Banipith and later Shantiniketan. Her debut film was “Samarpan” in 1948. But her first released film was “Beesh Bochor Aage” of M.G Pictures directed by Gunamoy Bandopadhay. “Samarpan” was released in 1949. In 1949 she acted in “Swamiji” where her acting, dancing and singing talent was highly praised. Afterwards she established herself as a major actress in films like “Kabi”, “Ratnadeep”. She also acted in Satyajit Ray’s “Kanchanjangha”. Though she was established as a film actress she never left theatre. She continued theatre apart from acting at the same time.
Her first marriage was with renowned football player Anil De. Her second marriage was with actor Rabi Ghosh. She died in Kolkata on January 14th, 1972.
