Anup Kumar is a well known actor who has a special place in the heart of the Bengalis for his amazing acting ability.
Anup Kumar was born on 17th June 1930 in Kolkata whose real name was Satyen. His parents Dhirendra Nath Das and Bijoya Das used to call him by the name Anup. He passed his Matriculation from Calcutta Jubilee Institution. In 1986, he got married to actress Aloka Ganguly.
Anup Kumar took his acting lessons from his father and the legendary theatre personality Sisir Kumar Bhaduri. He started acting quite early in life. He got his first break as a child artist in Dhiren Ganguly’s film “HaalBangla” which got released in 1938. Nimontron, Palatak are other noteworthy movies of Anup Kumar. He was also involved with theatre, yatras, direction of movies. He was proficient in different roles especially in comic characters.
In 1964, he was awarded the B.F.J.A award for Best Actor in the film “Palatak”. In 1971 , he was felicitated by the government for his role in “Nimontron”. His contribution to the Bengali theatre was well acknowledged and he received silver medal from Star Theatre. In 1988, he got West Bengal Natya Academy award. In 1989, he was awarded Siromoni Prize and again in 1991, he was awarded the Best Director for his yatras. In 1997, he was felicitated by B.F.J.A. for completion of 50 years in films.
In 1996, he was associated with politics and stood for Bidhan Sabha elections from Cossipore but couldn’t win.
