If a modern day Bollywood film buff were to be asked to say a name that can fit in any genre – tragic, comic, tragic-comic, dark, melodramatic, farce, burlesque et al, the first name would be that of Anupam Kher. There are few names that can reckon with this one on equal terms.
Kher who was born on March 7,1955 trained in the National School of Drama. He made his foray into films with Aagman(1982) but his trump card was Saraansh(1985) which saw an unbeatable performance in the role of an old father who had lost his son. After the success in the tragic role, he turned to comedy which gave him unlimited limelight. His Karma(1986) and Daddy(1989) brought laurels. Bend it like Beckham and Bride and Prejudice were international names for Khan though, they were neither the first nor the only. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s story Mistress of Spices found mentionable performance by Anupam Kher.
Om Jai Jagdish was his directorial debut where he tried to show some Indian traditional family values. His production and acting skills found special mention once more for Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara.
Anupam Kher did not restrict himself to the big screen – he did projects like Say Na Something to Anupam Uncle and Sawaal Dus Crore Ka on the small screen.
Anupam Kher’s first marriage to Madhu did not survive for too long. However his marriage to Kiron Kher was a promising union. Khan was the chairman of the Film Censor Board for sometime.
