Anywhere But Home rating: 6 out of 10(Pritam Roy wrote on 29 Mar 2009)

Kate (Reese Witherspoon) and Brad (Vince Vaughn) are living the good life together. They are enjoying all the things, without the burden of marriage weighing on their life or thoughts. They both come from broken families and they would literally go any distance to stay away from their respective families, especially during times like Christmas when everyone around them are 'stuck' with immediate and extended family members. But, once they are caught live on camera by family members, being stranded at airport, they are left with no other option, than visit their families. Now, thats not an easy feat, since they must visit four homes.

First, they stop to meet Brad's father and his brothers, which is anything but a normal family. Kate discovers that, Brad's real name is Orlando, which she didn't know in the three years, that they have been living together. Also, Brad is not respected by his brothers or anyone in the family, all of whom think, that he is too keen to show off. While the family has a spending cap on gifts, Brad splurges and he can't do anything to help his self-respecting family members. There are some funny moments, like when Brad tries to set up the dish antenna he gifted his father, on the roof, but fails to do so and ends up falling in the garden and creating a mess. Before anything else can happen, they move to Kate's mother's place, where they meet her side of family. Brad discover's Kate was a fat kid and had to attend sessions, and some of her embarrassing childhood secrets. Kate relives her childhood fears, terrorised by her nieces. They had to also give an impromptu stage performance in the Church, where Brad plays Joseph and Kate is virgin Mary. Kate thinks, that Brad is insensitive to her and wants to enjoy the limelight on his own.

When they reach Brad's mother's place, things move to a different level, as Brad's mother is having a relationship with his friend and Brad can't just accept that. Playing a game of Taboo, Kate and Brad mess up, leading Kate to accuse Brad of having an attitude problem on the way back. When Kate expresses desire to have a family, Brad freaks out. And no surprise, Brad gives the last stop at Kate's father's place a miss and lands up at his father's place instead.

Obviously, Brad realizes, what a fool he has been after listening to his father's two minute lecture on family and love. Kate also learns from her father, that spending time with the family is the best use of their time. Brad goes back to Kate and they proceed to their vacation and have a baby next year. While they are making plans to keep the baby news from their family, they are once again caught on live camera and you can imagine the rest.

Of course, as expected, the movie talks about being honest with your family and especially your partner as the key to happy and fulfilling life. The movie has a few funny moments including the first scene (suggest not walking in late), but nothing extraordinary. One fails to connect to either of the lead cast, as there is not enough emotional stuff in the script and you will not walk out of the theater with any special feelings or thoughts. While in India, it could be a good watch for young and aspiring couples in love, and those trying to plan or even avoid marriage, few would get motivated to tie the knot, by watching Kate and Brad.

P.S. Can't help but visualise an Indian remake of the movie. Shahrukh and Kajol would have suited the roles fine. Any guesses for the director? Go to the top to get my vote. :-)
