“Aponjan”was made in 1969 by the effervescent Tapan Sinha. As a film “Aponjan” had flaws & loopholes but the “heart” was just about in the right place. The postmortem of the degenerated capitalist, ideology-less society of urban Bengal was wonderfully crafted by Sinha & his group of Samaritans. This was also the debut film for Swarup Dutta & Samit Bhanja. The usage of Rabindrasangeets in the film have been mind boggling. Specially the shot taken behind a moving carcass van during the closing credits moves even the most avid nihilist. The background score by Tapan Sinha himself creates a tumult in the psychic of the viewer. Chinmoy Roy & Dilip Roy extract wonderful performances in brief appearances. There are definite waywardness in camera, lights & editing. But the immaculate philosophy, patriotism & humanity presented by Sinha have been energetic. The narration of “Aponjan” is brilliant & so is Sinha’s screenplay & for this reason it became a box-office blockbuster. Produced by K.L. Kapoor Productions the cast included stalwarts like Chhaya Debi, Romi Chowdhury, Jui Banerjee, Sumita Sanyal, Robi Ghosh & Bhanu Banerjee. The film won numerous awards & accolades.
