Harihar with wife and son Apurba comes to Banaras and takes shelter in a house. He is a priest, but also a practitioner of herbal medicines. Harihar falls sick due to over-exertion and dies. Apurba’s mother takes up the job of a cook in a rich family while Apu helps her. After some days, she returns to Nisehindpur with Apu. Apu leaves the job of priesthood and starts studying in a village school. He is the most intelligent student in school. Teachers love him and help him. Apurba then passes his matriculation exam with very good results - he wins the second place in the whole district. Then Apu aspires to go to Calcutta for further studies, but his mother protests. Apu convinces his mother and she finally agrees. He comes to Calcutta and takes shelter in a press and works part time. He joins a college. His mother is now lonely, sick and depressed. She wants to tell Apu about her illness but cant. Apu doesn’t want to come to his village leaving his education. His mother soon passes away. Apu comes home to empitess, packs his luggage and leaves his village for ever.
