    Aparna Devi was born in Kolkata on 2nd January,1919. Her birth place is in the house of Khudiram Bose Rd. in North Kolkata just next to the famous Star Theatre. Her father’s name is Ajit Bhattacharya. At the age of 12, while she was a student of a local school, she was married. She started studying again in Baghbazar Nibedita school after her marriage. But because of her troubled family life she couldn’t complete her studies in school.

    She made her film debut in 1937 film “Barababu” directed by Jyotish Bandopadhay. Her co-actors in that film were- Prafulla, Ranjit, Ashu and Usha Devi. At the same time she was working in a documentary film of Arora Films directed by Niranjan Pal. Pal’s deputy Uma Bhaduri introduced Aparna Devi with tagendary sister Bhaduri. Sister Bhaduri became her ‘theatre guru’. Bhaduri gave her a chance to co-act with him in the character of Helen in the drama “Chandra Gupta”. Since then she continued theatre acting in different theatre centre like Minerva, Rangmahal, Star, Natya Niketan. In 1953 she joined star theatre in the drama “Shyamali” and remained there till 1971. She left “Star” and joined “Kashi Biswanath Mancha” for a very short time and again come back to “Star” in 1972 and remained there till 1977 when she was forced to leave acting because of Arthritis. She acted in more than 100 films like – “Pratishuti”, “Bijaini”, Brahan Kanya”, “Mayer Pran”, “Rash Purnima”, etc. She received certificate of merit for her acting in Satyajit Ray’s “Pather Panchali”. Aparna Devi died in Kolkata on 11th January, 1982.
