    Aparna Sen was born in Kollkata to a Bramhin family on 25th October. His father is the veteran critic and film maker Chidananda Dasgupta. Her mother Supriya Dasgupta is the cousin of renowned Bengali poet Jibanananda Das. Her schooling was in Modern High School of Girls, Kolkata. After passing Higher Secondary Examination she studied in Presidency College.

    She made her film debut in 1960 film “ Teen Kanya” directed by Satyajit Ray. She played the role of Mrinmoyee in Tagore’s “Samapti”. She was then a mere school girl of 16. She resumed her film career again in 1965. This time it was Mrinal Sen’s “ Akash Kushum”. Since then she was one of the busiest actress in Bengali Cinema till she retired from acting. Her last performance as an actress was of her own film “Paromitar Ekdin”.

    In 1981, she made her debut as a film director. Her first directorial venture was “36 Chowringhee Lane” produced by Sashi Kapoor. She won the best director award in the National Film Award and her film won the Grand Prix at the Manila Intrenational Film Festival. Till date she has directed ‘Paroma’, ‘Sati’, ‘Yougant’, ‘ Paromitar Ekdin’ and ‘Mr. & Mrs. Iyer’. Her last directorial film won the best film award in the National level. Now she is busy in making her seventh directorial film, “Japanese Wife”. For the first time she is handling some one else’s story. The story was written by Kunal Basu.

    Apart from Bengali Cinema she also acted in English and Hindi films. Since her school days she started acting in little theatre group. She also acted in some commercial theatres during her hay days in cinema. All those theatre productions were box office hits only for her presence and acting. From 1968 to 2004 she edited successfully “Sananda” a women’s magazine from the ABP stuble, and it was a commercial success. She has been married thrice. Her first husband was Sanjay Sen, second husband was Mukul Sharma, who was an science writer and journalist and her present husband is Kalyan Roy, an author and professor of English in United States.

    She is a mother of two daughters, Kamalini the elder daughter, is married in USA, and her younger daughter Konkona Sen Sharma is a noted film actress in “Mr. & Mrs. Iyer”. Aparna Sen received “Padma Sri” in 1986. Soma Chaterjee has written a book on her named Cinema of Aparna Sen.
