Apon Shatru rating: 4 out of 10(Aditya Chakrabarty wrote on 19 Jan 2011)

‘Aapan Shatru’ or (One’s own enemy) is a very silly film though it promises to be a potboiler comprising of a cast of Indrajit, Arunima Ghosh, Arun Banerjee and others. It is a story of how a person can have an enemy right within his family and he need not look elsewhere to find or make enemies. In this case, it is the case of Rakhal Bagchi who becomes the ‘Aapan Shatru’ of his family though he is welcomed by open arms by them even after all these years.

Rakhal Bagchi is the union leader at a jute mill. The workers go on a strike as the owner doesn’t listen to their demands.Rakhal‘s family members go hungry and he starts drinking. The owner of the mill pays him money and he compromises. His wife searches for him, but cant find him initially though later on she finds him with Nayana, a nautch girl. He tries to shoot his wife, but Nayana comes in the way and gets shot instead.Rakhal flees.Manorama, his wife sets out for the city with her two sons. Soon after, the elder son is separated from her and her younger son Sumit on the road.Amit is found by some boys and taken to their leader John Uncle who is the ringleader of all the guys who are pickpockets.Amit is rechristened as Michael.

19 years pass. Michael and Sumit stay in the same locality though they don’t know each other.Rakhal has also become Raghubeer, a big drug lord who also deals in arms and ammunitions. Michael and Sumit do cross each other path a couple of times and Michael is no longer a pickpocket at this point of time. He also helps his mother to get home one day without ever recognizing her and vice versa.Raghubeer wants to employ the services of Michael as he is aware of his capabilities. He forces Michael to work for him as he holds John Uncle captive and lets him go only after Michael agrees to work for him. He asks Michael to finish off Sumit, the Borobabu of the thana. However Michael has no such intentions and he tells Sumit the truth as now they are close.Raghubeer meets Michael at a place and tries to shoot him, but Sumit arrives there and shoots Raghubeer and he is injured. He flees win his car and Sumit and Michael follow suit.Raghubeer takes shelter in Sumit’s house and discovers his wife there. They are surprised to see each other and Raghubeer comes to know that Sumit is his son.Raghubeer is arrested and produced before court. Over there, Raghubeer admits everything .Also John Uncle says something and produces a locket(which he had taken from Amit’s neck and kept it with him all these years). It turns out that Michael is indeed Amit.Raghubeer is sentenced to jail for 12 years and after he comes out, his entire family is waiting for him.

Arun Banerjee and Kalyani Mondol have acted well and we know what they can do though Arun’s wig as Raghubeer sticks out.Indrajeet as Michael has done a decent job.The songs aren’t great.Arunima Ghosh is seen after a long time on the big screen though her role is extremely limited and doesn’t have much to do. She is any day better than most new faces that we see and we hope to see her more. Towards the end, things become a little ridiculous as after 12 years, the two brothers look the same and so do their wives and in fact both of them even have children and it seems as if the director wanted to speed it up! The same can be said for the character called Julie who after 19 years more or less looks the same.
