For the popular song, 'Mere sapnon ki rani', the first choice of Shakti Samanta was Mohd Rafi who was abroad at that time, for shows. So music composer Sachin Dev Burman suggested that Kishore Kumar sing it instead and Shakti Samanta agreed. The song went on to top the charts and made Kishore Kumar very popular.

Aradhana got a lukewarm response at the Delhi premiere. However, collections picked up with each show and the film opened to full houses in Mumbai a week later and it went on to become a superhit movie.

Shakti Samanta was working on a big budget film, 'Jane Anjane', with Shammi Kapoor and Vinod Khanna. The script had been finalized, but Shammi Kapoor had put on a lot of weight and requested some time to shed off the kilos. But he actually kept adding on more and the film kept getting delayed. So Shakti Samanta decided to make a small-budget movie, with relative newcomers. While Aradhana (1969) went on to become a superhit, Jane Anjane (1971) was a debacle.

Shakti Samanta had planned to make 'Aradhana' with Bengali actress Aparna Sen, but she had other commitments so he signed Sharmila Tagore, with whom he’s done three other films, Kashmir Ki Kali (1964), Sawan Ki Ghata (1966) and An Evening In Paris (1967), convinced she’d be able to play the role of a mother.

When Shakti Samanta was shooting the song "Mere Sapno Ki Rani", he couldn't get combined dates from Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore. Sharmila Tagore couldn't make it to Darjeeling and so only Rajesh Khanna's portions were shot, showing him driving the jeep across the hills. Sharmila Tagore's footage was separately shot in Mumbai where a train set was erected in a studio. The two footages were later edited together to appear as if in the same frame.
