Arati Bhattacharya was born in Jamshedpur, Bihar on November 8th, 1951. Her real name is Bulbul. Her father’s name was Shudhanshu Bhattacharya and mother was Purnima Bhattacharya. She passed her Higher secondary Exam from D.M Modern Girls High School of Jamshedpur in 1967 and there after she passed Pre-university Exam from Woman’s College.
She started her career in stage when she acted I the drama “Nahabot” at the Rangmahal Theatres though her acting was highly acclaimed and the production was a commercial success she never acted on a stage again. She made her film debut in a Hindi film “Ek Adhuri Kahani” in 1971 directed by Mrinal Sen by the renowned photographer Nemai Ghosh. Her first Bengali film and her performance was highly praised. She became director in her later years. Her directorial debut was in a Hindi film “Mashooka”. Apart from this she she directed a few Bhojpuri Films and television films. She married Kunal Shingh, famous actor from Bihar in 1979. She now lives in Mumbai.
