Kaushik Ganguly, the director and Tapan Biswas, the producer of the film Arekti Premer Galpo(Just Another Love Story)has shown enough bravado in taking up a subject for the film, which is still considered as a tabooed topic(don't ask me why)in our society.kaushik is witty enough to pen down the story of Roop, his androgynous protagonist by mingling it with biography of Chapal Bhaduri, the first proclaimed Gay actor on Bengali stage. Using Chinese box narrative as the mode of narration, the film is nonlinear blending Roop's own story with that of Chapal's ,which is shown in a series of flashbacks and Kaushik's brilliance lies in the fact,he fuses the two parallel narratives at the climax. The film starts on a very bold note with Roop, the gay filmmaker attempting a documentary on Chapal's life. He is seen in a very flambuoyant mood, almost celebrating his sexuality. But as reels further unfold,we realise the wretched within, the hapless pathetic condition, the internalised pain under the pompous exterior. Both Roop's and Chapal's story have much agonising elements which are sure to draw sympathy from the viewers but kaushik makes his film more dark and pathetic by aggravating the agony with touching dialogues and situations. The soulful background and songs by Debojyoti Mishra intensifies the pain.
Speaking of performances,I must clarify one point, that Arekti is a complete performance oriented film and kaushik as usual has succeeded in bringing out the best from his ensemble cast.We have seen much of Rituparno's talents as a director, but Ritu's acting is really a revelation. It is just beyond words.Indraneil looks stunning and dilemma is all over his face.Jisshu looks enough mature and composed throughout the fllm.
Above all, Arekti is one of the best productions of 2010 and is definitely a must watch.
