  • The new Gen X sleuth

Arjun - Kalimpong e Sitaharan rating: 5 out of 10(Aditya Chakrabarty wrote on 04 May 2013)

We have already seen Bengali sleuths on screen like Byomkesh Bakshi, Feluda and others, all of whom are well known and highly appreciated by all but this is the first time that a team of new sleuths will be seen on screen. Samaresh Majumdar’s ‘Arjun’ series has been brought to screen with two stories(‘Khunkharapi’+’Kalimpongey Sitaharan’) merged in to one and having been made into a film called ‘Arjun’ which has released this Friday.

In this film, which is the first of the series and we expect more to come in the future, we see young detective Arjun solve a case taking the help of Amol Shome, his mentor and guide played by Sabyasachi Chakrabarty in Kalimpong. Arjun is a Gen X sleuth who doesn’t own a mobile but will be seen riding a bike. Om is played by debutant Om who helps to assist Amol Shome to solve Sita’s case. Sita is a teenager on the verge of adulthood, born and brought up in the U.S who has been brought to Kalimpong as her father wants to keep her away from her boyfriend who is a bad influence on her. Her nanny, Neelam looks after her. Her father also fears an attack from goons who think that the masters plans of the monastery are hidden somewhere in his house. However matters really get serious and deep because it seems everyone is involved here in some kind of treachery and wrongdoing and what follows is quite interesting.

T.Sarkar, the producers of the film have always produced films of different genres which are quite interesting and producing detective films is nothing new to them as they have already produced a few Feluda films before. It is nice to them to produce a such a film which has been mostly shot in Kalimpong and North Bengal. The main person to look out for is debutante Om because on him depends the fact whether more such films will be shot and whether this film will take off well. On that note, you can be rest assured that Om(previously seen in a bit role in ‘Jeet’,a serial on Sananda TV) has done an able job. His looks, body language and ability to solve cases by assisting Amol is all right and he has made the character of Arjun believable. Okay, so you can’t compare him with the rest of the sleuths because they are far older and more experienced than he is and they solve cases on their own, but he has been able to create an impression. Another person who has done a fine job is debutante Raya who plays Sita, the young teenager from U.S.A . She has done a fine job as well. To keep the humour going in the film, we have Biswajit Chakrabarty who plays Major and his words sometimes end in rhymes and his performance is top notch. Deepankar Dey and Sabyasachi Chakrabarty play their roles to perfection as well. Churni Ganguly is good and an excellent choice as Neelam. The film has so many twists and turns at the end that it might confuse you, but all’s well that ends well.

Binayak Sarkar and Sumita Bhattacharya have again lived up to their reputation of producing a film which is different.
