Ashim Kumar was born on 18th February, 1913 in Dhenkanal, Orissa. He did his schooling from South Suburban Branch School and passed his Matric. He graduated from Ashutosh College. He was an employee of electric supply for a long time. In 1959, he tied his knots with actress Manjula Banerjee but got separated later. He was known to have relationship with actress Shiuli Majumder.
Ashim Kumar was a gifted actor who was discovered by producer Mohan Majumder and offered him a role in films. He made his debut in Kartik Chattopadhay’s “Nilachole Mahaprobhu” in 1960. This movie became a landmark in his career. After this , Ashim Kumar was mainly seen to have worked in spiritual and philosophical movies. He had worked in some Hindi films, too. Purir Mandir (1958), Noder Nimai (1960), Anthony Firingi (1967), Sri Sri Ma Laksmi (1977), Jai Ma Tara (1978) are some of his films. He was also a professional theatre personality.
He was intimately involved with Shilpi Sansad.
