Ashutosh Gowariker was born on February 15, 1965. He was brought up in a middle class family of Delhi and had a deep influence of Hindi films ever since. His first stint in front of the camera was when he worked in a few commercials with Govind Nihlani and Jenny Pinto.
His first film was as an actor in Ketan Mehta’s Holi (1984). He also did a few other films like Naam (1986), Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro (1989) and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1993) and TV serials before he branched out on his own as a director. Ashutosh Gowariker’s directorial debut was Pehla Nasha (1993) starring Deepak Tijori, Pooja Bhatt and Raveena Tandon. It was a failure though. His second film Baazi (1995) starring Aamir Khan too didn’t do too well at the box-office, but was talked about nevertheless.
After 6 years, Ashutosh Gowariker made Lagaan (2001) for Aamir Khan Productions, which proved to be a landmark film in Indian Cinema. It was a huge success both commercially and critically, and became was only third Indian film to reach the top 5 at the Best Foreign Film Category in the Oscars. This made Ashutosh Gowariker world-widely famous, and a cult status in India.
Ashutosh Gowariker followed up with Swades (2004), starring Shah Rukh Khan. However, it did not do very well at the Box-office despite being critically acclaimed. Many viewers thought Shah Rukh Khan’s performance as Mohan Bhargav as his finest.
In Feb, 2008, Ashutosh Gowariker film Jodhaa Akbar opened with big success. Ashutosh Gowariker won 3 Filmafare awards in 2001 for Best Story, Best direction and Best film for Lagaan. He also Won National Award for Lagaan same year.
Besides these, Ashutosh Gowariker has also won several awards at various Film Festivals across the globe that year like Locarno Film Festival, Bergen Film Festival etc.
He has his own Production company, Ashutosh Gowariker Productions, which co-produced his Swades (2004) and Jodhaa Akbar (2008). He became a voting member at the Oscars in 2005. His wife, Sunita, is the Executive producer of his productions.
