Asit Baran is an actor of high repute and representative of Golden Era of Bengali Cinema.
Asit Baran was born on 19th November, 1913 in Kolkata whose nickname was Kalo. He had cultural bend of mind and was a student of the great legend Gyanprakash Ghosh, used to take lessons of tabla from him and perform in Radio. He was also an employee of Calcutta Telephones. He had two sons and one daughter.
He got noticed by the famous actor Pahari Sanyal when he was performing in All India Radio Music Conference as a tabla player. This impressed Pahari Sanyal immensely and he gave him his first opportunity to work as his younger brother in the film “ Protishruti”. It released in 1941 which was directed by Hemchandra Chandra. He had achieved a great feat in the world of Bengali films. He was the only artist who had acted and sang in his three movies at a stretch within a span of four years. These three movies were Protishruti (1942), Kashinath (1943) , Nurse C C (1947). Pratyabartan (1951) , Kaar Pape (1952) , Bondhu (1958), Smriti tuku Thak (1959), Antoni Firingi (1967) Sri Sri Ramkrishna Kothamrito (1982) carry the testimony of his memorable performances. He had also formed a theatre group “Rangorash” which used to spread the teachings of Ramkrishna Paramhansa. He passed away on 27th November, 1984.
