Sreejit Mukherjee , the debutant director of this film , has tried to re-discover the fake world of cine-superstars like once Satyajit Ray tried in NAYAK.
The easiest way to do this is to copy and paste the entire Ray-Film. But Sreejit is an intellectual person. So he took an intellectual way . He persuaded Prosenjit Chatterjee to act in his film in the role of the protagonist of the film where Prosenjit would be able to prove that he is no less than Uttam Kumar. Listening the script Prosenjit also believed the same and probably he also believed that Sreejit was no less than the great master. But before that Sreejit needed a producer. Probably in the same intellectual way Sreejit narrated the script saying that he was trying to make a film based on Ray's NAYAK and Bergman's WILD STRAWBERRIES. Probably both Prosenjit and the producer were not aware of the two films by the two masters, if they were aware they might have told Sreejit that you are talking non-sense, but they did'nt say this and the film's shoot get started.
What I have written so far may not be correct , but this happened exactly in the same manner in the film AUTOGRAPH. Here a debutant director Suvo(Indranil Sengupta) comes to the superstar Arun Chatterjee(Prosenjit) to persuade him to act in his film AAJKER NAYAK, which is a remake of NAYAK and a little bit of WILD STRAWBERRIES. Arun agrees not only to act but also to produce the film. Here also Arun never told Suvo that listening the script he found the claim nonsense.
And there lies the problem not only of AUTOGRAPH, but also the latest culture of young wannabe Bengali directors. Without learning the simple thumb-rules of film making, they are ready to take risks of challenging the old masters. This is not the way of paying tribute to the masters, rather on the contrary it is insulting them. How silly a film maker believes the two films are telling the same story? It only proves Sreejit not only misunderstood Ray's film, but also could not understand Bergman's theme.
Sreejit has tried to extend his story beyond that of Ray's by creating a love triangle between Arun,Suvo and SreeNandita(Nandana Sen), the live-in partner of Suvo. Only this part of the film is original,which is the worst part of the entire.
The screenplay and the dialogue are also very poor, much beneath any standard.Camera work is inconsistent,which never gells with the story-telling. Only thing that is outstanding is its music by Debajyoti Mishra. The lyric and the tunes
of all the songs are also very good.
