The most highly awaited Hollywood film of the year hit the theatres today (well technically yesterday given the paid previews), Avatar! A James Cameron film Avatar stars Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation), Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver. James Cameron’s epic film Titanic back in 1997 stole hearts worldwide; from a teenager to a 70 year old everyone who saw the film wept for Rose and Jack Dawson not to mention the gazillions of girls who went ballistic for Leonardo Di Caprio. Titanic broke many records becoming the sixth highest grossing American film ever! Now after 12 years comes another all Cameron film with a budget of about 1200 crores!! So is Avatar worth all the hype? Well... read on!
It’s AD 2154 and Jake Sully, an ex-marine who is paralyzed from waist down, is being sent to Pandora to participate in the Avatar programme. An earth-sized moon, Pandora is covered with lush forests and inhabited by blue skinned, 3-meter tall aliens called the Na’vi who live harmoniously in their unspoiled world. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have created genetically-bred human-Na’vi hybrids known as Avatars. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake will be able to walk again. Sent deep into Pandora's jungles as a scout for the soldiers that will follow, Jake encounters many of Pandora's beauties and dangers. He also meets Neytiri the daughter of the chief of one of the Na’vi clans. Should he spy for the humans and their thirst for precious Pandora metals or protect the Na’vi and their secret ways of life… Jake will have to make the choice between his duty and his destiny!
Visually Avatar is spectacular… in fact spectacular is also an understatement for this monstrosity on the screen. If you’re thinking we’ll wait for the DVD or we’ll watch it at home DON’T! This one is an absolute must watch on the big screen. The story I would say is not something that we haven’t heard before, in fact the story of an animated film called Ferngully was very similar to that of Avatar. However, despite the clichés this film is worth multiple watches! Think about the best things we liked about Disney’s Tarzan, Lord of the Rings, Independence Day and the Matrix trilogy because Avatar combines the best from all these films. The special effects of a new world leave the Matrix trilogy far, far behind. Pandora with all its fantastic creatures gives LOTR a run for its money. When Jake Sully unites the Na’vi, it’s a speech that will definitely give you goose bumps and get the adrenalin pumping just like Bill Pullman’s speech in Independence Day! And Neytiri and Jake’s romance is as cute as Tarzan and Jane’s expect Jake is the city boy in this case! ?
The special effects of Avatar leave you speechless for starters get this… the world of Pandora shines at night all the animals and the plants are fluorescent and they glow when the sun goes down! Now imagine that on the big screen… it looks superb! Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana’s computer generated Avatars do most of the acting as for the humans of the film, arch villain Giovanni Ribisi does alright but Stephen Lang’s Miles Quatrich seems like an extremely clichéd bad boy out to kill all good in the world. What’s most impressive about Avatar is the concept of a whole new world… though this has been done before for numerous fantasy books and films but Avatar brings this world to life in whole new way. Every little creature in Pandora is unique. One of things that take your breath away are the floating mountains of Pandora. Even the Na’vi language is something that director Cameron got linguist Professor Paul Frommer to invent!
So is Avatar worth the hype? … Oh! Absolutely! Avatar is a must watch in fact I’m going to watch it again! I’ve already seen it in 3D and an honest suggestion is that the 3D in our theatres here is not really worth it. Watch it in the IMAX format instead or just go for the regular 2D version… it’s just as spectacular!
    Rating – 4.5/5
