Aziz Mirza was born in 1947 in Bombay. His father Akhtar Mirza was a famous script writer. So, Aziz had the influence of Hindi films right from his childhood. He just wanted to be involved with films in some way. That is why he even played small part in forgettable films like Pyaasa Dil (1974), Sandhya (1975) and Sandhya (1980). In 1985, He set up a production company with his brother Saeed Akhtar Mirza and his friend Kundan Shah, Iskra.

In 1989, He directed a TV serial Circus, based on the lives and trauma of the people who work in Circus. The soap opera was hugely popular at a time when TV was the only other source of entertainment than Films. This serial also made Shah Rukh Khan, then a newcomer, a household name.

Aziz Mirza made his debut in Hindi movies when Viveik Vaswani, Shah Rukh’s and his common friend, approached him to direct a film for him. The film was Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992) starring Juhi Chawla and Shah Rukh Khan. It was a huge success both commercially and critically, and Aziz Mirza established him as a talented director.

However, Aziz Mirza made his next film Yes Boss (1997) after 5 years starring his faithful friends Shah Rukh and Juhi. Yes Boss outdid Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman in terms of success at Box-office and Aziz Mirza proved his intial success was no fluke.

In 1999, Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla and Aziz Mirza opened a production house Dreamz Unlimited. Their first venture was Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000), which failed to work despite of big stars, popular music and excessive marketing. This was a major setback for Aziz Mirza and his directorial career.

His next film Chalte Chalte (2003) however made up for his previous film’s failure. Starring Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherji, Chalte Chalte proved to be a hit. However, Aziz Mirza took a break from directing films due to the sudden death of his wife.

In 2008, Aziz Mirza's film Kismet Connection starring Vidya Balan and Shahid Kapur, released to mixed reports. His elder brother Saeed Akhtar Mirza is a famous parallel film director who has made films like Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hai (1980), Mohan Joshi Haazir Ho (1984), Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro (1989) and Naseem (1995). His father Akhtar Mirza was a famous script writer, who has penned films like Naya Daur (1957), Waqt (1965) and Dhund (1973)
