Once during a fight with some hoodlums from the opposite river, she meets Raghunath. . Raghunath a rich farmer soon is the apple of his mothers eye. His mother Hemkunwar has given a fat dowry to her daughter at marriage and wishes to recover ti doubly back when Raghunath marries. But Raghunath and Kanchan fall in love and Hemkunwar reluctantly consents to their marriage. However, she is sorely disappointed at the paltry dowry that Kanchan brings. Hemkunwar is goaded by her friend Shanti, to ill-treat Kanchan. Now Raghunaths father Rajpal dies and when Kanchans father Devidayal comes to settle matters, Hemkunwar insults him and makes him leave with Kanchan in disgrace.
