    Some of the notable performances of Balraj Sahni are in "Kabuliwallah","Aamanat", "Waqt", "Haste Zakham", "Do Raste", "Ek Phool Do Mali", "Jalianwalabagh", "Haqueekat', "Aasra", "Bhabi" and many more. But the landmark of his film career can be traced in M.S Sathyu's "Garam Hawa"which is based on the dilemma caused by the Partition. In a word, Balraj is superb in this film. Unfortunately, this brilliant actor has not been natinally acclaimed as he deserved.

    Balraj Sahni came to lime-light in his outstanding performance in Bimol Roy's "Do Bigha Zamin". In a sequence he required to pull a rikshaw speedily on the streets of Kolkata. In order to bring authenticity he had to practise rikshaw-pulling. In the scorching heat of the sun, the bare-feeted Balraj had to pull on the rikshaw with a passanger on. The shot has been treasured as an asset as one of the best scenes ever captured in camera.

    Balraj Sahni came to India from West Punjab( Now in Pakistan) and was under acute financial stringency. He had his hardest days during his stay in Kolkata. The hearsay goes, he had to spend nights on foot-paths of the "City of Joy". His communist conviction had, per haps, declassed him from the classed society. However, he went to Santiniketan and took up the job of teacher. Here he came to contact with Rabindra Nath Tagore. He read Tagore's works extensively which influenced him greatly.

    In an episode of KBC Amitabh Bachchan admited that Balraj Sahni is his most favorite actor. Only a genius can acknowledge a genius. As an actor Balraj was incontrovertable, as a man he was out and out a gentleman with dynamic personality with amicable nature. A post-graduate in English literature, Balraj was an active member in IPTA( Indian People's Theatre Association) and came into contact with progressive intelligentsia like Sambhu Mita, Tripti Mitra, Salil Chowdhury, Utpal Dutt, G.P Sippy.
