  • A tale of the ‘Bapis’

Bapi Bari Jaa rating: 6 out of 10(Aditya Chakrabarty wrote on 07 Dec 2012)

The directorial duo of Abhijit Guha and Sudeshna Roy have always been known to have made films which are different like ‘Cross Connection’, ‘Prem By Chance’ and ‘Teen Yaari Katha’. If in Cross Connection they introduced a new group of actors and actresses like Ritwik Chakrabarty, Rimjhim Mitra and Abir Chatterjee(all of whom are pretty well known since then specially Abir), then in Bapi Bari Jaa, their latest film, they have introduced a completely young group of actors and actresses who are nearly all amateurs. Since the film is a youth centric new age film, the duo have given a chance to the group of youngsters to really perform creditably because the film hardly even boasts of any very well known character artiste. Therefore the film which has been produced by Ideas Creations Pvt Ltd(Prasenjit’s brainchild) and Shree Venkatesh Films has to be different.

Bapi is incidentally a term which a lot of people who have hung at ‘paras’ and had ‘adda’ sessions in the neighbourhood will be able to relate to. This term is a not exactly a slang term, but can be referred to someone who is looked down upon , is hopeless and is not popular in the neighbourhood as he does not fit into the system. Sabyasachi Chakrabarty’s younger son Arjun Chakrabarty(the older one Gourav Chakrabarty is more famous) plays ‘Bapi’ we all know whom no cares for more or less and is a misfit. Even he decides that it is time for him to change and like others he must also get a girlfriend as all his friends do. Mimi Chakrabarty who plays Dola had already won accolades along with Arjun in Gaaner Opare, the serial which brought them in the limelight and she does perform well. The rest of the cast are just about okay though Arjun fits the character well. Abhijit-Sudeshana had chosen these youngsters based on the characters and the age group suits them just fine as they are all of that age group . Abhijit-Sudeshna have always understood the problems of the youth better than most and handled them the best which reflects in this film as well. Maybe because they are young at heart is why perhaps they can understand how young people of that age(as shown in that film) think about life, love, sex and face certain problems.

This is indeed an interesting endeavour by Ideas Creations Pvt Ltd and Shree Venkatesh Films.
