At the zenith of his career, Bappi's name became synonymous to contentions and controversies. One of the hottest of them was the tune used by Bappi and Laxmikant-Pyarelal in the films "Thanedar" and "Hum". Both confessed, from which source they lifted the tune. But, each of the schools demanded itself to be the first to introcuce the tune. Thus, the issue of "Tama Tama" and "Chuma Chuma" became an endless bone of contention.

As circumstanced, Bappi Lahiri, being purturbed and hopeless in Mumbai decided to return to Kolkata, just when he chanced to compose music for "Zakhmee' . It was literally the "Acid Test" for Bappi. He poured his emotions wholeheartedly for his compositions. The film was super hit and so was Bappi. Each song proved Bappi's novelty. Bappi's signature number was , of course, "Zakhmi Dilo ka badla chukane aye hain diwane-diwane".The music became the balm for his "Zakhmi dil". Homecoming cancelled.

He sang and played the tabla at a time.
