A dark comedy atlast with all things at the right places...
Barah Aana is a very different take on the society at large. It is not pretentious nor does it try to preach you. It is a simple movie of three people coming from completely different backgrounds of life. A waiter(Arjun Mathur), A Driver (Naseeruddin Shah) and A watchman (Vijay Raaz). The movie revolves around their frustration, angst and failures. This is a story seen through the eyes of these people who comprises a major chunk of our society. How the hapless watchman gets dragged into a crime through some bad and good luck and then on how he tries to make the most out of it. I won't say much on this as I want all to see this movie.
Life is not easy and you have to fight for your survival, that’s what the first reel of the movie offers.
Some crisp editing, powerful performances and good dialogue writing is able to put forth a brilliant story. I was reading a review about this movie where the critic draws parallel of this movie with Arvind Adiga’s White tiger and cannot agree more. The movie deals with poverty leading to anti-social activities and the reasons. It does not go on giving moral lectures.
Naseerudin Shah comes up with a quite (watch the movie to understand the pun!) but impactful performance. Arjun Mathur, whose previous movie Luck By Chance showcased his acting in glimpses, grows as an actor. He was his comfortable self. The show stealer however is Viajy Raaz, when it comes to some brilliant performance from a very non-descript character no one does it better than Vijay Raaz, take for instance his earlier movie Raghu Romeo or the character of corrupt police officer in Delhi 6, you can see a very seasoned actor in him. The actor gets a fresh air in this movie and just look at the way he has performed. Its difficult to hold your fort when you are put in the same frame as Naseerudin Shah, but not only he does that he also steals the thunder from the other veteran actor. Tannishtha Chatterjee and Violante Placido pitch in with good performances.
Raja Mohan, the director, makes a powerful debut in hindi film industry with this movie. Not only has he been able to convey a message but also has entertained us thoroughly. I would also like to congratulate the casting director for the ensemble of the cast that he has managed.
All in all it’s a brilliant movie, that incorporates the best of both worlds from Entertainment and New wave. This movie makes us sure that the Indian Film Industry is definitely maturing from its song and dance routine.
