Saanwari (Nandita Das) is a woman of grit and determination staying in a remote village in Rajasthan. She does pottery while her husband Sohan (Raghuvir Yadav) drives a cycle rickshaw in Jaipur. Togethers they support their family of 2 kids and Sohan's parents. Shoba Mathur (Deepti Naval) who works for State Women Development Organisation, asks Saanwari to Join the "Saathia" programme for the upliftment of women and against child mariage. And she is paid for her work too. All's well until Saanwari leads a morcha against upper caste Gujjars. The village's Gujjars then decide to teach a lesson to the lower caste potter. Few men attack her and her husband in a secluded place in the desert . Sohan is gravely wounded and Saanwari is raped by two of the men . Thereafter, Saanwari starts a traumatic journey to bring the rapists to book and get back her self respect . She runs from pillar to post, starting from the village police station to village hospital to city hospital to the magistrate to women's police station. At each place she is ridiculed for no real fault of hers. Finally she manages to file F.I.R., get a grant of Rs. 1 lac from the P.M. relief fund and initiate C.B.I. enquiry against the wrong doers. The court case starts and she gets a good public prosecutor Advocate Pratap Chauhan (Gulshan Grover). But the local M.L.A. Dhanraj Meena (Govind Namdev) an upper caste himself who depends on the Gujjars vote bank influences the case in every imaginable way, and ultimately manages to get the accused acquitted . This gut wrentching movie is based on a true story.
