Roopa (Nargis) lives in a chawl with her paternal uncle. Her uncle forces her to find some work so that she earns money and buys alcohol for him. She is badly beaten by her uncle when she gets no work and doesn't earn any money. Her neighbor Raj (Raj Kapoor) helps her by lending her some money. One day, her uncle throws her out of house. Raj is also not there with his room being locked. Roopa walks away from chawl and goes to sea to kill herself but couldn't master the courage to do it. She sits across a tower and suddenly realizes that a person Ashok (Ashok Kumar) is making her painting. When she asks about it, he tells her that he is a painter and is still searching for a painting that would get sold. They both become good friends while Roopa moves into his house. She starts helping Ashok in paintings and they both start to earn lot of money. Ashok fell in love with Roopa but he is unaware that Roopa had a friend named Raj. One day Raj comes back and Roopa starts visiting him on regular basis and falls in love with him. Ashok isn't happy with Roopa and he warns Roopa that Raj isn't interested in her. But he is interested in her wealth. But Roopa does not listen and leaves Ashok's home to live with Raj forever. Will Ashok be able to live without Roopa? Will Roopa ever come to know that Ashok loved Roopa? Was Ashok's belief correct that Raj is a fraud? All these questions are answered in the remaining part of the story.
