Husnlal and Bhagatram were younger brothers of Pandit Amarnath, a prominent composer of the 40's. Husnlal was a violinist, and also a classical singer. Bhagatram was an Harmonium player. Initially they worked as assistants for Pandit Amarnath and gained necessary technical knowhow for music direction in movies.

Husnalal & Bhagatram were the first to set up a tradition of a 'Pair' of Music Directors. They started their career in 1944 with 'Chand'. They reached thier heights with 'Ek Dil Ke Tukade Hazar Hue' (Rafi) - 'Pyar Ki Jeet' (1948). It is still considered as on of the best songs of Rafi Sahab. According to Husnlal Bhagatram they had to put great efforts to make this song an instant hit. 'Ek Dil Ke..' was written by Qamar Jalalabadi, but according to him he did not wrote this song for 'Pyar Ki Jeet'. He wrote it for 'Sindoor' in 1941 but Shashidhar Mukherji, director of 'Sindoor' rejected the song and declared it 'useless'. Later, O P Dutta, director of 'Pyar Ki Jeet' heard it and was so excited that he changed the picturisation according to the demand of the song, and Husnlal Bhagatram proved him right, as the song became an instant hit soon after the release of the film. They used songs written by Qamar Jalalabadi for most of their films.

'Abhi To Main Jawan Hun' (Lata Ji) - Afsana - 1951 has been the signature song of Radio Sealon's famous program of 'Hamesha Jawan Geet' for many years. This song was 'Uncomplete' in the film and has been taken 'as it is' in our site for the sake of Nostalgia. This 'Pair' of Music Directors ruled the film industry for 12 long years till 1956. After that, they could not produce more miracles. In their last days, due to the wheel of the fate, they were working in the orchestra of Laxmikant Pyarelal as merely instrument players. What a pity that the Creators of 'Wo Meri Taraf Yun Chale Aa Rahe Hain' - Kafila - Kishore Kumar - 1952, 'Sun Mere Saajna Re' - Aansoo - Lata & Rafi - 1953 and 'Jindagi Bhar Gam Judai Ka Mujhe Tadapayega' - Miss Bombay - Rafi - 1957 had to face such bad days in life ! They parted away in the late sixties. Husnlal settled in Delhi and Bhagatram stayed in Bombay. Husnlal died in December 1968, and Bhagatram expired in November 1973.
