    Margaret was born in Ireland and lost both her parents as a child. At a young age, she also lost her boyfriend in an accident. She was a brilliant student and was studying Hindu philosophy when she visited India. She was interested in working in India for the people and especially for women. Though Vivekananda initiallyu tried to dissuade her, she persisted and ultimately he gave her permission to come and work in India. Vivekananda personally received her in India to arranged for her training. After she was trained, he personally baptised her and gave her a new name, Nibedita. She worked a lot for womens education. She selflessly served the people during the plague in Calcutta. During that time she started writing books. After Vivekanandas death she joined the Indian patriotic movement and came in touch with Aurobindo Ghosh, whose work greatly inspired her. When Aurobindo Ghosh was entangled in a murder case and he fled to Chandannagore, she took charge of the bulletin paper “karmajogin” earlier published by Aurobindo Ghosh. During this time, she fell sick due to over work. Her friends and co workers tried to move her to Darjeeling. There she completed her book. She died in Darjeeling.
