Somnath Sen has always made very topical films with a strong message. He has also certain set actors who appear in all his films. His latest film 'Bhalo Meye Mondo Meye' is a bit of a disappointment for several reasons.
Firstly the film is about very depressed souls who somehow manage to meet at a beach every year! All of them come there every year! The most tormented of them is Genia, a high class ‘call girl’ who supports her family financially but is driven out by her father when he comes to know the means of her income. She feels so let down by her family that she starts wandering about aimlessly .Bivash is another character who is extremely depressed .His relationship with his wife is strained after he becomes an novelist and one fine day she leaves him and goes away.Dr Ashok Shome, a bird lover is actually a ‘free’ bird’ himself as he has nothing to fall back upon and he like the others comes to the beach to seek peace and solitude. Then there are these two cops whose presence in the film is somewhat undefined. Finally you have Sobhon, Raju’s friend, a crippled man who loves Genia though it is not reciprocated by her and he does nothing else but think about her all the time!
The characters are not properly defined and the film is very slow. What is the message of this film unlike Somnath‘s other films which have a clear message? Is it that good virtues exist in everyone, but somehow we refuse to accept it or is it something else? Regular actors in Somnath’s films like Subhas Chatterjee and Sree Bhigu(the astrologer who appears in all films of Somnath and has the same expression on his face throughout!) are all present in this film.
This film is possibly Somnath’s worst film till date.
