My Rating

  • Billu rating: 3 out of 10(Archisman Munshi wrote on 01 Mar 2009)

I remember Priyadarshan first came into national prominence with Saaza e Kaala Pani. Probably that was his first Hindi (or dual language ?) film. Then came Virasat and people took notice. What a fine performance from Tabu in Virasat!.

Then Priyadarshan changed his style and moved to comedy movies. Hera Pheri was perhaps the best comedy movie I watched in many years. Paresh Rawal was absolutely superb, Om Puri was brilliant. Even the dumb Sunil Shetty fit nto his role nicely. The situational comedy and dialogues made the movie a gem to watch.

Unfortuately Priyadarshan's graph started falling after Hera Pheri. Each movie that came after Hera Pheri was inferior to its predecessor. It is still a treat to watch Hungama and Hulchul. Even though they were not as good as Hera Pheri but stil they were good enough for repeat viewing. But the others that followed Hulchul are not worth viewing the second time. Infact Bhagam Bhag was so bad it was not even worth viewing at all.

Whenever Priyadarshan releases a movie I wait for another Hera Pheri with my fingers crossed!

Coming to Billu. Irfan Khan's style of comedy is different from others. Perhaps more like Om Puri but different from Asrani or Rajpal Yadav. Irfan puts importance on the dialogue and situation to bring comedy out of it. He does not depend on the histrionics usually associated with a Bollywood comedian. One remebers the comedy of "Jaane bhi do Yaroon" when watching Irfan. And he did play his part quite well in the movie. Without a good script and dialogue it is really difficult to give a good performance after all. With Gauri Khan as producer all the leading actresses of Bollywood flocked in to give a cameo - enough material for Priyadarshan to make profit in box office. However Irfan's attempts were totally spoiled by SRK and the climax of the movie. SRK played himself. So there was not much to act for him. Only the climax gave him some opportunity to perform. But SRK had put in so much melodrama in the climax, it becomes unbearable.

Overall it is again another Priyadarshan comedy not worth watching the second time and will be forgotten very soon.
