Bipasha Basu was born on 7th January 1979 in Delhi, India. Her family later moved onto Kolkata where she was brought up. She hails from a Bengali family and is the second of three daughters to her parents. Initially she planned to study medicine, but after 12th standard she changed her stream and joined Commerce. However, in 1996 she met Mehr Jessia a well known name in the modeling circuit, who advised her to participate in the upcoming Supermodel of the World contest. Bipasha participated in the same and eventually won the contest. She was just 17 then. After winning this contest she moved to New York where she had a successful modeling career.

She made her debut with the Abbas-Mastan thriller Ajnabee in 2001 which starred Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor and Bobby Deol along with her. The film was a hit and Bipasha Basu’s performance was appreciated.

The films that consolidated her position in the industry were Raaz (2002) which was a horror flick and Jism (2003) where she played a married woman in an extra marital relationship. Both these films had excellent music and did well at the box-office too. After this most of her films did not do well and her career was on a downslide. She came back with Anees Bazmee’s No Entry and despite the film being a multi star cast one Bipasha’s role as a bar dancer was noticed.

The year 2004 was a major turndown year in Bipasha’s career as all her releases that year bombed. Ishq Hai Tumse, Rudraaksh & Aetbaar despite having good starcasts and storylines didn’t do well. The same continued in 2005 when most of her films flopped. However she was acclaimed for her performances in Prakash Jha’s Apaharan and Shikhar, both 2005 releases. In 2006 came Madhur Bhandarkar’s Corporate where she played the main protagonist. Her performance in the said film was appreciated both by critics as well as the masses. The same year Vishal Bharadwaj’s adaptation of Othello released wherein she played Billo and though she had a small role in Omkara, her song Beedi jalaile became a rage throughout. She became synonymous with its dance steps and had the entire nation grooving to the same. The song later turned out to be the song of the year. She had a double role in the second series of Dhoom and managed to impress inspite of the film boasting of a starcast like Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan. The film also showcased her comic talent to an extent.

In 2008, Bipasha's film Race was a big hit. She also got to pair opposite younger heroes, Ranbir Kapoor in Bachna Ae Haseeno and Neil Nitin Mukesh in Freeze. Bipasha has two under-production films namely Mr Fraud another Abbas Mastan film where she has a double role and has Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgan as her co-stars, and Pankh which is slated for release in 2008.

Bipasha has been nominated for Filmfare awards in different categories for four times till date. But unfortunately she always lost out to her contemporaries. However she has one trophy to her credit which was presented to her as the Best Debut –Female for her first film Ajnabee in 2001. She won the dynamic duo alongwith Dino Morea in the 2003 Zee Cine Awards. She won the Face of the year award in 2002 at the International Film Academy.

She is currently dating actor John Abraham. She previously dated fellow model Dino Morea. In 2007, a UK magazine Eastern Eye named her as the Sexiest Asian Woman in the world. In January 2007, Bipasha danced with sex workers at a charity drive in order to promote Aids awareness and safe-sex in India. She was one of the judges for the 2004 'Femina Miss India' pageant. She has appeared in a music video for Sonu Nigam’s album Kismat and has also made an appearance in Jay Sean’s music video Stolen. Is fondly called Bips or Bonny by family and friends. She is the brand ambassador for the Kinetic Scooty, Pantene and has also endorsed products like Clinic Plus, Loreal and Head and shoulders in the past. Apart from this she has done ramp modeling for top fashion & diamond jewellery designers. She is a part of the World Tour that is scheduled to commence in April 2008 and features Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai etc. This tour will span six continents covering 18 countries. She was the privileged Indian celebrity who went to Lisbon to announce the new Seven Wonders of the World. However, here she embroiled herself in a kissing controversy with Portuguese football star Christiano Ronaldo.
