Nilambar and Pitambar were two brothers who were married off at an early age. When Biraj came to her father-in-law's house, Nilambar was like her childhood friend. However Nilambar had a bad habit of smoking marijuana. After the death of her mother-in-law the responsibility of the family fell on Biraj. She was then a mere teenager. Nilambar was a teetotaler. Pitambar didn't feel free after handing over the keys of the vault to his wife. He always tried to control her and never allowed her to get close to Biraj. Pitambar thought that someday Nilambar might deprive him of his father's property. So he wished for an early division of the property. One day he quarrelled badly with Nilambar. In the meanwhile their sister Putu was married. Her father-in-law's demand for drowry was so high that Nilambar had to take loans after mortgaging their own house. Nilambar didn't inform anything to Biraj. So when Biraj came to know about this she was hurt. Misunderstandings cropped up between Biraj and Nilambar. One day the zamindar saw Biraj in the bathing ghat. He sent a proposal to Biraj through his maid servant Sundari. Biraj threw Sundari out of her house. Pitambar started spreading scandals about Biraj's relationship with the zamindar. Hearing this Nilambar was furious and he rushed to Biraj. But it was too late. By that time Biraj had already dived into the river.
