Biraj Bou directed by Manu Sen is a movie focusing on the rural life of a remote village. The leading role of 'Biraj' played by Madhavi Chattopadhyay symbolizes a typical hindu wife who worships her husband ' Neelu ' (Uttam Kumar) next to god. She does every thing in order to keep her husband happy. ' Nilu ' is an honest & kind man whose heart melts at the slightest sufferings of the villagers. In order to save the villagers from the cruel Jamindar ' Nilu ' helps them to lead a normal life. Nilu sells all his property & jewels in order to get his sister(Puti) married. Nilu is aggrieved when Puti's in laws refuse her to come to her brother's house during Durga Pooja. With time Nilu's financial position begins to decline & finally they are on the verge of bankruptcy. In this critical moment Nilu's brother Bithu (Anup Kumar) refuses to help his brother. He even aspires for the separation of the wealth between the two. At this juncture a lusty Jamindar begins to look upon Biraj with lust & filthy motives. Biraj refuses to accept Jamindar's filthy proposal & turns himself down,but she is forcibly taken to the Jamindar's boat. Nilu misunderstands Biraj & doubts her faithfullness. Biraj in order to save herself from the lusty clutches of the Jamindar dives into the river. Nilu repents for his behaviour to Biraj. Bithu regrets for his behavious & returns back to his brother. Biraj is fortunately brought to a hospital but she loses her vision. After extreme sufferings Biraj finally finds her husband, & they return to their house.
