Bobby Deol (real name Vijay Singh Deol) was born on 27th January 1967 in Mumbai. His father Dharmendra and brother Sunny Deol are both Bollywood stars. Since, he was brought up in filmy atmosphere it was natural for him to be drawn to films from a very young age.
He began his career as a child artist in Dharam Veer where he played the young Dharmendra (Dharam). However, the first film that he did as a lead hero was Rajkumar Santoshi’s Barsaat in 1995 where he debuted opposite Twinkle Khanna who also entered filmdom with the same film. Barsaat's box office result was average but got Bobby instant recognition.
After Barsaat came Gupt (1997) which was a murder mystery and was well appreciated by the audience. This consolidated his position as an actor. In 1998 came Kareeb and Soldier, the latter being a semi-hit and while the former didn’t do too well commercially, it helped him strengthen people’s belief’s about him being a good actor. In 1999, he appeared in his home production Dillagi along with elder brother Sunny Deol who debuted as a director with this film. The film did not do well at the box office. Later in 2001, he gained moderate success with Ajnabee which was followed by a hit Humraaz in 2002. The former being a murder mystery and the latter showcased his romantic angle. In recent times, he did Shakalaka Boom Boom in 2007 which failed at the box-office but his portrayal of a negative character was much appreciated and the film also did well overseas. His second release this year Jhoom Barabar Jhoom got an initial opening but later failed to recover its cost. However in this film too his character of a dumb Steve aka Satwinder appealed to the audiences. One of his last releases of 2007, was Apne where he appeaered with his father Dharmendra and brother Sunny Deol. The film opened to good reviews and did well overseas too.
Amidst all this, he had to face a few failures in his career too. Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya which was the launch pad of Miss World Aishwarya Rai opposite him bombed at the box office. In 2000, he saw a trilogy of flops with Baadal, Bicchoo and Hum to Mohabbat Karega. After a few more forgettable films came 23rd March 1931 : Shaheed Bhagat Singh wherein he played the title role. His 2004 releases Kismat & Bardaasht did nothing to resurrect his falling career. The following year too, his films Tango Charlie, Barsaat and Dosti did extremely moderate business. His most recent release was Nanhe Jaisalmer (2007) where he played himself.
