Shibani was supposed to marry the local zaminder. But on the day of her marriage she went with her childhood friend Ratan for a boat ride. Suddenly their boat capsized and both of them managed to reach the shore with difficulty. The place was unknown to them. Suddenly Ratan saw that their boat was floating away. So he started running to catch the boat leaving Shibani alone on the shore. Shibani found a steam launch moored to the shore. Chandranath, the owner of that launch, alighted. He was surprised to see a lonely girl on that shore. Shibani told him everything. Chandranath agreed to send them back to their village by his launch. But Ratan did not return. Shibani thought Ratan might be dead. When Ratan came back with his boat, he found Shibani missing. Shibani was not accepted in the village. So Shibani got shelter in Chandranath's palace. Chandranath wanted to marry Shibani. Shibani agreed to the proposal. The marriage however was not a happy one. One day Ratan was discovered on the island by some men. They took him back to the palace. Ratan started singing. Shibani heard his songs. She found Ratan. Chandranath observed the changes in Shibani after Ratan's return. He got jealous. He arranged a picnic on the island on the occasion of one month of their marriage. Before Shibani and Chandrnath came, the attendents had locked Ratan. Shibani grew suspicious on not finding Ratan there. Suddenly she heard a knock on the closed door of a building. Chandanath told Shibani that it was Ratan and said that he had to die in that building as he had dared to love the wife of Chandranath. Shibani requested Chandranath to release Ratan. But Chandranath didn't listen to her. Ratan remained locked there and Shibani was left outside. However the pangs of conscience suddenly gripped Chandranath and he ordered the launch to go back to the shore. He released both Ratan and Shibani and they were united.
