Whenever we spoke about Yash Chopra, we instantly remembered Romance {Despite of him directing many other genre films also} and his Romantic films. His legacy was carried forward by his son Aditya Chopra, Karan Johar, Imtiaz Ali and many more. But then there were many other directors who had heavy hangovers of these film makers, they wanted to make films like them and some did make but with their own style. And then there were many more that just ended up being a copy or look alike. Kunal Kohli, who did many films with Yash Raj banner as director now brings us his latest offering as a producer. Let’s find out what does he have for us ?

‘Break Ke Baad’ is story of Abhay {Imraan Khan} and Aliya {Deepika Padukone} are childhood friends and have loved each other since then. Abhay is a reserved simple guy who works in his father’s {Navin Nischol} cinema hall and Aliya wants to be an actress just like her mother {Sharmila Tagore}. Thus one fine day Aliya decided to move to Australia for studies, leaving behind Abhay and his mom. Out there Aliya gets busy in her new life with new friends and thus decides to take a break from Abhay. Abhay cannot handle this and thus moves to Australia. But Aliya is sure this time with her feeling and want to focus on her studies and career. Thus starts the journey of Abhay to find himself and to get back his lost love.

Story is simple and one liner, it has some shades from ‘Love Aaj Kal’ and few more recent movies. Screenplay is good in first half with some good scenes between the main protagonists. The whole childhood love, the Imran-Deepika getting drunk scenes, Cyrus and Nadia as Aliya’s landlord, etc. but the second half has very less to offer and turns out to be more on repetitive and drag mode. Except for one or two scenes the emotional angle is totally missing in the film. One cannot feel the pain of Break or Separation. Things move so smoothly in this film, which shows that life is just easy as getting a pirated movie download from Internet. The climax is so hurried, abrupt and typical that one does feel like cheated. Camera work is good and all the locations are nice.

Music is young and peppy. Songs like Adhure, Dooriyan and Meri Padosi looks nice and goes well with the film. Background music is average.

Director Danish Aslam brings us another youth romance which is more like a NRI youth romance without any emotional bonding to it. The whole soul is missing from the movie, making it an average watch. His direction and storytelling way is nice, but the writing part is so weak that neither even the director nor the actors could save it. Danish we have seen such movies for zillion times, we understand your love for such movies, but don’t tribute them by just making a look alike, tribute them by making something different out of it.

Imran Khan is nice and sweet, but again repetitive at many times. Imran I don’t know what, but you need to do something to look different or maybe act different from you last movies. Deepika looks smart, but lacks the grace she had in Kartik Calling Kartik and her whole character was total confused and half baked. Navin Nischol, Sharmila Tagore, Shahana Goswami and others are wasted in small roles.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai dum ?

Dum hain, lekin sirf first half mein hai, second half is weak and drags at many places. Thanks to some peppy songs, some interesting scenes between the lead pair in first half of the film the movie is watchable. But overall it lacks soul and fails to connect on emotional grounds. Also it’s high time we stop making films for NRI youth and start focusing films on our youths love stories. All the romantic film makers like Yash Chopra, etc who gave us some good classics pls wake up from your break and come back and give us a real and good love story.
