  • Majid Majidi Hindi filmo ka Darzwaza Khole…

Bumm Bumm Bole rating: 3 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 14 May 2010)

Iranian films have been known for their simplicity and performance from the child actors. Directors like Majid Majidi or Abbas Kiarostami have made some mind blowing films in past, out of which some have acquired the cult classic status. One of them is Majid majidi’s “Children of Heaven/ Bacheha-Ye aseman”, a film which is made with total simplicity and has captured the innocence of small kids. This film has inspired many filmmakers to make films on Children’s and their simplicity, but despite that too this movie stays at the top and will rule in future too. Priyadarshan decides to remake this film [in an official way] and make it in Indian way. Let’s find out if he will succeed or not in this highly complicated task.

“Bum Bum Bole” is story of Khogiram [Atul Kulkarni] a hard working villager staying in north east part of India with his wife [Rituparna Sengupta] and their kids Pinu [Darsheel Safary] and Rimzim [Ziya Vastani]. Due to a tiff in his factory with his manager he is removed from there and is jobless. Meanwhile at the same time Pinu accidently looses an only pair of shoes of his little sister Rimzim. Its impossible for Rimzim to go to school without the shoes, but they cannot demand it from their parents who are at present worried about their live hood. Thus Pinu works out a plan where he gives his pair of shoes to Rimzim who goes to school early in morning and when she comes back, Pinu wears them and go for his afternoon school. Together both the kids try their hard to cope with this issue, without troubling their parents. At that time Pinu gets an opportunity to get back a fresh pair of shoes, but the task is hard. Will Pinu succeed, well that’s what the movie is all about.

Story is originally written by Ace director Majid Majidi, but then besides the kids issue and shoes the movie has been given some local terrorist angle which hampers the film in big way. All those unwanted scenes make the film drag at times. Screenplay is nice, but the magic touch of the original film where the bonding between the kids was fantastic is not the same. Its weak and at many times misses to touch your heart. Still the kid’s scenes are nice, but in comparison with the original they are not even 10%. I fail to understand what was the need for inserting the terrorist angle and more of parents work issue in this film. Those issues could had been simple and direct to the point and not dragging like it was in the film. As it is the film is a simple feel good film and by adding these dramatic stuff the viewers gets confused with the film. But for people who have not seen the original, the kid’s trauma will be interesting and a novelty to watch. Camera work is nice and colorful.

Background music is soothing and goes well with the film.

Priyadarshan is a nice director who sadly is known only for his comical films. But besides comedy he has made so many great films and has potential to carry such subject on his shoulders. But out here he goofs up with the subplot and emotional scenes. There have been many great foreign films which have been made in Hindi films, but then there are some films like Ek Ruka Hua Faisla which have been adapted so well to our culture and do not look like a forighn film at all. This is exactly what was expected from priyadarshan to do in this film, and to certain extent he succeeds by getting the Iranian Islamic culture replaced by North East Indians. But on other side he somewhere fails to carry the weight on his shoulders.

We all had seen the fantastic performance of Darsheel in Tare Zameen Par, he tries his best to impress us out here too, but falls short somewhere in comparision with his earlier film. Still his presence and expertise helps him to make an impression in this role. Ziya Vastani is sweet and charming, she makes you watch her with a smile in the film. Atul Kulkarni, Rituparna Sengupta and Kaveri Jha are average.

So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hai dum ?

Dum hai, for people who have not seen the original this film will be something new to watch out, despite of the goof ups by the director or weak screenplay writing. The theme, concept, the scenes between the kids will manage to get the interest of a movie lover. Also the movie opens a new door of Majidi Majidi types of films in Hindi cinema [Where simplicity has already lost its battle to glamour or fictitious world] and wish to have something as creative like him. Would recommend the people who have not watched the original, to watch it after watching this film - Just for the sheer brilliance of the Ace director. And for those who have watched the original, Re watch it.

Ratings : 2.75/ 5 [For the Concept , Theme and Scenes between the Kids – Which are adapted from the Original film]
