One word can describe it only: CRAP...
Let me be totally straight-forward about this. It is a complete trash-bin material, and it gives me a lot of pain to write this about a movie that has been made from the story written by one of the finest writers bengali literature has ever produced. Saradindu bandopadhyay brought the characters of Adim ripu alive thru his writing..and Anjan Dutta, somehow, managed to kill those lively characters , in his film.
Where from I start, there are so many "Oh God" type expressions ..lets begin with the "satyaneshi" himself..Abir Chatterjee in the role of Byomkesh. Let alone byomkesh, he failed to portray even a normal detective character. Dialogue deleveries given by him are like recitation in any drama, situational suspnses are non-existent. Byomkesh means so much to a young bengali detective- adventure-lover. Byomkesh and the stories reminds us of the daily life of calcutta and india in a time when the whole indian subcontinent was going through a turmoil.Ajit, satyabati, keshto da, riot, patna, small lanes, trum, old news papers, fishy characters, street lights, desires, demolitions, juvenilism. So much to dream about.
Well dont expect a single of those things in this movie.Anjan dutta as a director, always has a tendency to portray things with an over-intellectualism. Intelect , I guess, cannot be defined by lighting a cigerrette in coffee-house, or opening a book with one finger in the chin. So far, most of the movies he did, had some other anjan-type plots..and was branded as "his" movie..and people have seen those movies with a fixed mindset and expectation.
I that sense, this film was out of his comfort zone, as not much scope of showing "antlami"..and he failed miserably. The sequences that were supposed to be suspense filled, were as if people involved in the scene already know whats going to happen. e.g.Byomkesh was supposed to fin a key after a bit of searching in a lane, but here Abir new the director told him where the key was, and he picked it up. I wont use up rest of the space by criticising him, because there is so many "horrendous" situations that it may well construct a PhD thesis. A big ZERO will suffice.
Swastike Mukherjee changed the script to such an extent that it completely violated the mood of the story and movie.another insult to great Saradindu.Another example of how superficial self-proclaimed "I-am-a-big-monkey" actresses in tollywood likes to call the shots, and complete dolls follow them for personal interest. Again peepli live is coming back to mind, meaningless rat-race of shoudl-be-existenceless people. But the society gives them prime existence and importance.
Saswata chatterjee as Ajit, and Chandan Sen as bantul tried to play the saving grace of the movie, but don't just go to the theatre to watch them only. They tried their best, but well, u know who calls the shots..
Rudranil should concentrate on what he does best..these type of roles he should not even dream about..it takes some creativity to dream about something as well. Some people doesn't even have that.
All in all, one of the worst movies made in bengali cinema. If this is doing well in box ofice, that again makes Peepli Live's view successful..R-Race..!!
